Editorial policy

Our guides are meant to help homeowners understand a problem, know what questions to ask, and make better decisions when hiring a pro. Here's how we work.

Who writes our guides

Guides are researched and written by Panyala, who runs Free Plumbing Estimates (see About). Panyala is not a licensed plumber. Each article shows a byline and the date it was last updated. Cost figures come from published sources, which are cited where they are used.

How we research

  • We base guidance on widely accepted practice and public sources such as government agencies (for example, the U.S. EPA's homeowner septic guidance), state and local health and building departments, and manufacturers' installation instructions.
  • Where rules vary by location, which is often in plumbing and septic work, we say so and tell you who decides locally.
  • We give ranges and rules of thumb only when they're commonly used, and we label them as general guidance rather than code.
  • We don't publish invented statistics, reviews, or price figures.

Safety-related topics

Sewage, septic tanks, gas, electricity, and ladder work can be dangerous. Articles on these topics include safety notes and recommend licensed professionals where appropriate. We never recommend entering a septic tank or doing work that requires a license.

Independence

We earn money by connecting homeowners with contractors (see About). That doesn't change our advice. We mention brand names only when it helps readers understand a product category, and we aren't paid to mention them.

Updates and corrections

We review articles periodically and update the "last updated" date when we make meaningful changes. If you spot an error, please tell us through our contact page and we'll review it promptly.
